What Parabolic SAR measures
The calculation tracks an extreme point in the current direction and advances the SAR toward it. The acceleration factor increases as new extremes are made, subject to the configured maximum.
When price crosses the calculated stop-and-reverse level, the sequence changes sides and begins tracking the new direction.
How to read Parabolic SAR
Points below price describe the calculation's rising state; points above price describe its falling state. The narrowing distance between points and price shows the accelerating trailing behavior.
SAR is easiest to interpret in sustained directional moves. Frequent side changes identify the kind of sideways action in which a trend-following calculation is likely to whipsaw.
AptiStockX default settings
AptiStockX uses an acceleration factor of 0.02 with a maximum of 0.20 and renders the SAR marks with the packaged desktop appearance.
The interactive example starts with only Parabolic SAR enabled. It intentionally uses AptiStockX's synthetic SPY demo data, so the page teaches the charting workflow without presenting live market information.
A practical AptiStockX workflow
Start with a clearly trending chart segment and follow the dots from the beginning of the move to the first reversal. Then compare a flat segment to see how often the state changes.
Use zoom and pan rather than judging only the most recent dot. The sequence of acceleration and reversals provides more context than a single current mark.
Limitations and interpretation
Parabolic SAR can reverse repeatedly in congestion and can sit far from price early in a move. Parameter sensitivity also changes how quickly the points catch up.
It is a trend-following reference, not a guarantee that a crossing begins a new sustained trend. Combine it with broader price structure and volatility awareness.
Technical indicators summarize historical data. They do not predict outcomes, provide personalized investment advice, or replace independent research and risk management.
AptiStockX is a native desktop stock charting and analysis application for self-directed traders and researchers who want local data, native speed, and a durable workflow.
