What Williams %R measures
The numerator compares the recent highest high with the current close, and the denominator is the full high-low range over the lookback. Multiplication by -100 creates the indicator's inverted negative scale.
Williams %R is closely related to the Stochastic Oscillator but presents range position with a different orientation and scale.
How to read Williams %R
Readings above -20 place the close near the recent range high; readings below -80 place it near the range low. These zones describe position, not an obligation to reverse.
Watch how the oscillator behaves around trend pullbacks. In strong trends, it may repeatedly return to an extreme and then resume rather than cross the full range.

A practical AptiStockX workflow
Compare the fast 7-period curve with 14 and 20 to see how the selected range changes the reading. Short windows will normally reach and leave extremes more often.
Review both trending and sideways segments. Range-position oscillators tend to provide different context depending on whether price is rotating or moving directionally.
Limitations and interpretation
An old high or low leaving the lookback can move the indicator even if the current close changes little. That is a property of the rolling range.
Extreme readings can persist during strong moves. Combine them with price structure instead of using -20 or -80 as automatic action thresholds.
